Ahlul Bayt News Agency, DULUTH, Minn, US -- A Duluth mosque will stay open, thanks to a successful fundraising drive.
Area Muslims bought the deed to the former Unitarian Universalist Church in Duluth's Woodland neighborhood three years ago with a down payment of $130,000.
Muslims renamed the building the Islamic Center of the Twin Ports and have been using it ever since. But they needed to raise $200,000 by Sept. 1 to complete the purchase — or lose the building.
They reached the goal on Aug. 21.
Board member and former president Nik Hassan tells the Duluth News Tribune that completing the purchase was a significant milestone. Hassan says until the center opened, area Muslims "never had a place to call home."
Outside of Duluth, the nearest mosque is in the Twin Cities.
